The asymmetry of tax compliance and the disaffection it produces
Over 5.9 crore income tax returns were filed in India before the 31 July 2026 deadline—roughly 6-7% of the working-age population. The specific disaffection with income tax in India is not just about the rate. The rate has moved in both directions over the past decade without making tax compliance more palatable. It is about the asymmetry of compliance. The salaried person pays in full, on time, with no agency and no escape. Others navigate the system differently. Naming what the disaffection actually is is the beginning of addressing it.
